Advancements in Airway Clearance Techniques: TMU Organises Guest Lecture

On 12th November 2024, the Department of Physiotherapy at Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU) marked World Pneumonia Day with a highly insightful guest lecture on the topic “Advancement in Airway Clearance Techniques”. The event took place at LT 603, 5th Floor, Department of Physiotherapy, Nursing Building, starting at 10:00 am.

The session was part of the Ministry of Education Innovation Cell and TMU's Institution Innovation Cell initiatives, aiming to shed light on innovative techniques for managing respiratory conditions like pneumonia, COPD, and other diseases.

Expert Speaker and Participants

The guest speaker for the event was Dr Divya M. Sharma (PT), a Senior Physiotherapist from the CTVS Department of Safdarjung Hospital and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi. With over 28 years of experience in physiotherapy, Dr. Sharma shared valuable insights into airway clearance techniques.

The session was moderated by Dr Shivanee M. Kaul, the Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, and coordinated by Dr Shipra Gangwar (PT), with co-coordinators Dr Nandkishor Sah (PT)Dr Himani (PT), and Dr Priya Sharma (PT). The attendees included BPT 4th YearMPT 1st SemesterMPT 3rd Semester students, and faculty members.

Key Highlights of the Lecture

Dr. Sharma covered a comprehensive range of topics related to airway clearance techniques, including:

  • Postural drainage
  • Percussion therapy
  • PEP (Positive Expiratory Pressure) therapy
  • Autogenic drainage
  • High-frequency chest wall oscillation

She also delved into the latest technological advancements in respiratory care, such as:

  • Flutter devices
  • Acapella
  • Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation (IPV)

The lecture emphasised the importance of these techniques in managing pneumonia and improving patient outcomes. Dr. Sharma presented evidence-based research demonstrating the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing lung function and showcased real-life case studies to illustrate their clinical applications.

Physiotherapy's Role in Pneumonia Management

Dr Sharma highlighted how physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in managing respiratory conditions. By adopting advanced airway clearance methods, physiotherapists can significantly aid in secretion mobilisation, reducing respiratory distress, and improving overall recovery rates in patients with pneumonia and COPD.

Interactive Q&A Session and Conclusion

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where attendees engaged in discussions about practical applications of airway clearance techniques. The event ended on a high note with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Shivanee M. Kaul, acknowledging the efforts of the speaker, coordinators, and attendees.

Impact of the Event

This guest lecture served as an engaging platform to raise awareness about pneumonia and strengthen the knowledge base of students and faculty regarding advancements in physiotherapy for respiratory care. The Department of Physiotherapy at TMU continues to lead in promoting innovative healthcare practices.
