CTLD’s Faculty Development Programme Empowers Educators with Emotional Intelligence Skills
July 8th, 2023, In response to the ever-changing landscape of the global workforce, and recognising the increasing importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills, the Centre for Teaching Learning & Development (CTLD) at Teerthanker Mahaveer University has taken a significant step to equip the faculty members of the university in this context. The knowledge of emotional intelligence will lead to the conducive behaviour of faculty members with all stakeholders including students, thereby to a better teaching-learning environment.
A global study conducted by Capgemini Research Institute, reported by Abid Husain on November 5, 2019, predicted that emotional intelligence would become a "must-have skill" in the next one to five years, with a six-fold increase in demand worldwide due to the growth of artificial intelligence and automation. The impact of automation and AI has been felt across various industries, and as a result, the demand for EI skills in India is expected to increase 8.3 times in the next three to five years, the highest among all countries according to the report.
Recognising the significance of EI skills in the workplace, more than 60% of organisations have started testing for EI skills while assessing and hiring employees at the senior management level. Moreover, a large share of employees are willing to improve their emotional intelligence skills as long as it is integrated into the performance management system, reflecting the growing importance of these skills for professional development.
To cater to the changing needs of the education sector and to foster a conducive teaching-learning environment, TMU's Center for Teaching and Learning Development (CTLD) initiated the Faculty Development Programme. The goal of this program is to equip faculty members of all colleges within the university with the knowledge and understanding of emotional intelligence.
The CTLD's initiative aims to facilitate constructive behaviour among faculty members, enabling them to effectively engage with all stakeholders, including students. By integrating emotional intelligence skills into their teaching methodologies, faculty members will be better equipped to understand and address the diverse emotional needs of their students, leading to enhanced learning outcomes and academic success.
The Faculty Development Programme has witnessed six batches of 30-35 members each. The program has already made significant strides in nurturing emotional intelligence skills among faculty members. It has been noted that the share of organisations conducting EI training for employees at the mid-management level at TMU is twice the global average, demonstrating the university's commitment to creating a positive and emotionally intelligent working environment.
As the rest of the faculty members prepare to undergo the Emotional Intelligence training, TMU is leading the way in recognising and harnessing the power of EI skills in education, ensuring that its faculty members are well-equipped to thrive in the current scenario of an ever-evolving professional landscape.
With the implementation of this Faculty Development Programme, TMU is taking a proactive approach to empower its faculty members with the necessary emotional intelligence skills, fostering an enriched academic environment and preparing them to excel in their roles amidst the dynamic challenges of the future.
