Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College Observes World Diabetes Day

In a commendable effort to promote health awareness, the Department of Community Medicine at Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College, under the leadership of Dr Sadhna Singh, Head of the Department, organised a special event in Sin Bagadpur Village on 14 November 2024 to mark World Diabetes Day.

Raising Diabetes Awareness in Rural Communities

The event aimed to address the rising burden of diabetes in rural areas by focusing on early detection, prevention, and community education. Over 100 villagers actively participated in a free diabetes screening camp where their blood sugar levels were tested.

The camp's findings were significant, identifying 30 individuals at high risk of diabetes, with five referred for further medical evaluation. This initiative highlights the pressing need for accessible healthcare in underserved communities.

Educational Activities to Promote Healthy Living

As part of the awareness campaign, MBBS students from the college staged an engaging and informative Nukkad Natak (street play). The performance emphasised the importance of:

  • Adopting healthy eating habits.
  • Maintaining regular physical activity.
  • Undergoing periodic health check-ups.

The event also featured interactive educational sessions that provided villagers with insights into recognising diabetes symptoms, managing their diet, and incorporating exercise into daily routines. Attendees were given pamphlets detailing tips on diabetes prevention and management, ensuring the knowledge shared reached beyond the event itself.

Positive Community Impact

The initiative was met with overwhelming appreciation from the village community. Many participants expressed their gratitude for the free screening services and the valuable health education provided.

Dr Sadhna Singh highlighted the importance of such grassroots programmes, stating, "Raising awareness and promoting preventive measures in rural areas is crucial to tackling the diabetes epidemic effectively."

Continuing the Mission of Health Promotion

The Department of Community Medicine at Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College is committed to extending its outreach efforts to rural communities, ensuring that health awareness and preventive measures become accessible to all.

By empowering villagers with the knowledge and tools to combat diabetes, this World Diabetes Day initiative sets a benchmark for health promotion in rural India.
