TMU Hosted 3-Day Faculty Development Program on Quality Concepts for Academic Excellence
Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad, reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence by organising a transformative three-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) titled “Quality Concepts for Academic Excellence: Empowering Educators through Quality Circles, Lean Approaches & 5S” was held from 8th to 10th July 2025, this event was conducted in collaboration with the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) under the Train the Trainer Initiative.
Inauguration and Resource Persons
The program commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, signifying the dispelling of ignorance through knowledge. The session was formally inaugurated by key dignitaries, including Prof Amit Kansal (Associate Dean-Academics), Dr Neha Anand (Assistant Director Academics and Convener), Shri Avinash Chandra Upadhyay (North Zone Director, QCFI), and Mr Thomas Mathew (Chief Operating Officer, QCFI). Their collective presence enriched the platform with practical insights and academic foresight.
Day 1 Highlights: Introduction to 5S and Live Observations
The first day introduced the 5S methodology—Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain—as a strategic tool for institutional excellence. Faculty members were divided into teams and participated in a unique 5S Walkthrough covering five university departments, including the Central Library, Digital Marketing, Store, Hostel – Vidhya Bhawan, and the Admission Cell. Participants documented existing practices and gaps using mobile photography.
Later, teams presented their findings and received guidance on preparing case study presentations, enhancing their ability to communicate improvements through data and visual evidence.
Day 2 Highlights: Deep Dive into Quality Circles
The second day focused on the 12 Steps of Quality Circle, fostering structured problem-solving skills. Facilitated by the resource persons, the sessions involved:
- Brainstorming exercises for idea generation.
- Use of Fishbone Diagrams, Flowcharts, Milestone Charts, and Pareto Analysis to identify root causes.
- Data collection and analysis for decision-making.
- Emphasis on effective communication strategies is essential for implementing quality practices.
These hands-on sessions empowered participants with tools to address real-world academic and administrative challenges.
Day 3 Highlights: Lean Quality and Statistical Tools
Day three explored the application of Lean Quality Circles, aimed at waste reduction and process optimisation. A session on Histograms helped participants understand data variation and distribution. It was followed by training on Control Charts, a vital component for maintaining consistent process quality and detecting deviations.
